Melbourne to Uluru Road Trip by Car: Our Australian Outback Adventure Begins!

We’re finally on the road!

After looking forward to this trip for such a long time, our Melbourne to Uluru road trip has officially begun.

Of course, flying to Uluru would be much faster and easier. But this time, we wanted to experience something different. Instead of flying over the Australian landscape, we decided to drive through it.

Our journey will take us from Melbourne to Adelaide, then to Coober Pedy, and finally to Uluru.

It’s a long way, but that’s exactly what makes this adventure so exciting.

For us, Uluru isn’t the only destination. The roads, small towns, changing landscapes, meals, rest stops, and unexpected moments along the way are all part of the journey.

🚗 Our Road Trip Route

Our main route is:

Melbourne → Adelaide → Coober Pedy → Uluru

And we’ve already completed the first part!

We left Melbourne and drove for around 8 hours to Adelaide.

Eight hours in the car is definitely a long drive, but watching the scenery change along the way made it feel like the holiday had already begun.

The busy Melbourne surroundings gradually disappeared behind us, the roads became longer and quieter, and we started to see more of the wide-open Australian landscape.

This is one of the reasons I wanted to travel to Uluru by car.

When you fly, you leave one city and arrive at another destination a few hours later. But when you drive, you get to see everything in between.

And Australia has a lot of “in between”!

🏡 A Relaxing Day in Adelaide

We are now safely in Adelaide, staying at my younger sibling’s home.

After yesterday’s 8-hour drive from Melbourne, we decided not to rush anywhere today.

Today is simply our rest day.

We can relax, enjoy some family time, eat well, and recharge before the next big part of our journey.

And we definitely need the rest because tomorrow is going to be a very long driving day!

🏜️ Tomorrow: Adelaide to Coober Pedy

Tomorrow morning, we’ll pack the car again and head north toward Coober Pedy.

We expect the drive from Adelaide to Coober Pedy to take around 10 hours.

Yes... 10 hours! 😂

It will be even longer than our drive from Melbourne to Adelaide.

But strangely, instead of worrying about the long drive, I’m incredibly excited!

This is the part of the journey where I expect the landscape to really begin changing.

As we leave Adelaide behind and travel further north, I’m looking forward to seeing the cities and greener landscapes gradually give way to the vast, dry scenery of the Australian Outback.

Long roads.

Wide-open skies.

Small towns.

Red earth.

And hopefully some unforgettable views along the way.

This is the Australia I’ve always wanted to experience from the road.

⛏️ Why I’m Excited About Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy is not just a place where we’re stopping for the night.

It’s one of the destinations I’m especially curious to see.

The town is famous for its opal mining history and its unusual underground lifestyle. Because of the extreme temperatures in this part of Australia, many homes and buildings have traditionally been built underground.

I’ve seen photographs of Coober Pedy many times, but actually arriving there after driving through the Outback will be a completely different experience.

That’s one of the things I love about road trips.

You don’t suddenly appear at your destination.

You slowly make your way there.

Every kilometre becomes part of the story.

🗺️ Why Drive from Melbourne to Uluru?

Some people might wonder:

Why drive all the way from Melbourne to Uluru when you could simply fly?

That’s a fair question!

It is a very long journey, and it requires planning, accommodation, food, fuel, rest stops and many hours behind the wheel.

But I wanted to experience just how enormous Australia really is.

I have lived in Australia for more than 30 years, yet there are still so many parts of this incredible country that I haven’t experienced like this.

Driving from Melbourne toward the centre of Australia gives us the opportunity to watch the country change right in front of us.

From Melbourne’s familiar city environment to South Australia, then through the Outback and eventually toward the red landscape surrounding Uluru.

That journey itself is something I want to remember.

🍚 A Road Trip for Six – And Yes, We Brought Korean Food!

There are six of us travelling together, so food is definitely something we had to think about.

Eating at restaurants for every meal during a long Australian road trip can become expensive and sometimes inconvenient, especially once we travel further into remote areas.

So, naturally, we brought some Korean food with us!

We packed kimchi and several Korean side dishes, and whenever we have access to cooking facilities, we plan to make some rice and enjoy a simple Korean meal.

Sometimes, after spending an entire day travelling, a bowl of warm rice with kimchi tastes better than anything else.

For this trip, I think our three most important rules are simple:

Eat well. Rest well. Drive safely.

Everything else is part of the adventure.

So far:

Melbourne → Adelaide: approximately 8 hours ✓

Today:

Rest and recharge in Adelaide ❤️

Tomorrow:

Adelaide → Coober Pedy: approximately 10 hours 🚗

And after Coober Pedy?

We continue north toward the place we’ve been waiting for...

Uluru!

I’m especially excited to see how the scenery changes as we travel deeper into the Australian Outback.

Today, though, we’re enjoying a peaceful day with family in Adelaide.

Tomorrow morning, the bags go back into the car, the road trip playlist goes on, and our adventure continues.

🌅 Next Stop: Coober Pedy!

This journey isn’t only about reaching Uluru.

I want to remember the roads we travelled, the towns we passed through, the food we ate, the people we met, and those little unexpected moments that make a road trip special.

So I’ll be recording our journey along the way.

Melbourne → Adelaide → Coober Pedy → Uluru.

We’ve completed the first 8-hour drive.

We’ve had our Adelaide rest day.

And tomorrow, a 10-hour Australian Outback drive to Coober Pedy is waiting for us.

I can’t wait!
