A Day in an Australian Childcare Centre! Here’s a Look at Our Daily Routine!

A Day in an Australian Childcare Centre: Our Daily Routine

Hello 😊

My name is Sunny Yoon, and I work as an early childhood educator in Melbourne, Australia.

It has already been more than 30 years since I began living in Australia. As I approach ten years of working in early childhood education, I have gained many valuable experiences and insights that I would love to share.

Through this blog, I will answer common questions about Australian childcare centres one by one and share helpful information based on my real-life experience.

Today, I would like to begin with something many parents are curious about: What does a typical day look like at a childcare centre in Melbourne?

A typical day usually follows this routine:

☀️ 6:30 a.m. – The Childcare Centre Opens

Children begin their day with free play. They can enjoy activities such as building with blocks, drawing, or playing quietly while settling comfortably into the centre.

If some children are still tired and would like to continue sleeping, we provide a separate, comfortable space where they can catch up on their morning sleep.

🍞 6:30–8:00 a.m. – Breakfast

A simple breakfast, such as cereal or toast, is provided. We make delicious toast using vegan butter.

We also learn each child’s breakfast preferences. Children who prefer cereal are offered cereal with milk. For children with lactose intolerance or dairy allergies, lactose-free milk or soy milk is available.

As the children sit and eat breakfast with their friends, they begin their social interactions for the day.

🍎 9:00–9:30 a.m. – Morning Tea and Group Time

Fresh fruit is always served for morning tea, giving the children nutritious energy for the day ahead.

After morning tea, the children participate in group activities such as singing songs, reading books, and taking part in simple learning experiences together.

🎨 9:30–11:30 a.m. – Educational and Play-Based Activities

During this time, a variety of age-appropriate learning experiences are provided to support each child’s development. These may include reading, singing, art, language activities, and early numeracy concepts.

Educators are usually allocated at least three hours each week to plan their educational programs. When preparing a new program, we reflect on previous learning experiences, review our observations, and focus on the children’s current interests, strengths, and developmental needs.

🍽️ 11:30 a.m. – Lunch

Children are provided with a balanced meal, and educators also support them in developing healthy eating habits.

Because children from many different cultural and religious backgrounds attend Australian childcare centres, their dietary practices and beliefs are carefully respected.

Every day, we check each child’s allergies and cultural or religious dietary requirements. This information is clearly recorded on individual cards, and children with special dietary needs are served first to ensure their meals are safe and appropriate.

For example, the centre where I work does not cook beef or pork. This decision was made because many Muslim children attend the centre and also to ensure that nutritious meals can be enjoyed safely by all children.

😴 12:30 p.m. – Sleep or Rest Time

Depending on their individual needs, children may have a nap or participate in quiet activities.

Sleep is especially important for babies, toddlers, and children up to around two or three years old, so sufficient rest time is included in their daily routine.

Kindergarten-aged children do not usually want to sleep, so they can continue with quiet play and learning activities. However, if a child feels tired or would like to rest, we provide a calm and comfortable space where they can relax.

🍪 2:30 p.m. – Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is one of the children’s favourite times of the day!

Simple and tasty snacks such as biscuits, fruit cake, vegetables, crackers, and cheese may be provided. Children’s birthday celebrations are also often held during this time.

After afternoon tea, the children usually enjoy outdoor play. Outdoor play gives them valuable opportunities to build friendships, learn more about themselves, and develop their physical skills.

🏡 5:00 p.m. – Children Begin Going Home

Children gradually begin going home as their parents and carers arrive.

Pick-up times vary according to each family’s schedule. While waiting, the children continue playing and look forward to being happily reunited with their families.

🔒 6:30 p.m. – The Childcare Centre Closes

That is a general overview of daily life in an Australian childcare centre. Everything I have shared is based on my own experience working as an early childhood educator.

The safety, well-being, learning, and development of every child are our highest priorities. In future posts, I will continue to share more detailed and practical information about Australian childcare centres.

One of the biggest concerns parents often have is:

“Will my child be able to settle into childcare?”

The good news is that most children begin to settle comfortably within approximately one to two weeks 😊

In my next posts, I will share more useful information, including how to choose the right childcare centre, childcare fees, and practical tips based on real experience.

I look forward to answering your questions and helping you understand childcare life in Melbourne!
